King Abdullah Sports City
On September 12th the specialized stadium department of the Royal BAM Group, HBM Stadien- und Sportstättenbau GmbH together with BAM International were awarded with consultancy works for the joint venture BESIX (Belgium contractor) / Al Muhaidib (local Saudi contractor) who were awarded with the +/- € 380 Mio Lump Sum Turnkey contract for the design and construction of the King Abdullah Sports City Project in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The parties already joined forces in the tender stage.
The King Abdullah Sports City Project contains a luxurious soccer stadium for 60.000 spectators, including large royal suites for the Saudi Arabian Royal Family. Besides this large soccer stadium this project also contains a mosque, an indoor sports arena which can host more than 10.000 spectators, an outdoor athletics stadium, and several other outdoor sport facilities like tennis courts, practice pitches for soccer, etc.
The client, being Saudi Arabian Oil Company, Saudi Aramco, is the largest client in Saudi Arabia in the construction industry. This client wishes to have a state of the art world class stadium next to the international airport of the city of Jeddah to host football matches for club, national and international teams.
The King Abdullah Sport City project was schematic designed by OVE ARUP in London, before the Design&Build contract was awarded. Currently the Team of BESIX, Al Muhaidib supported by BAM are together with OVE ARUP in London finalizing the design of the different project components. In the meantime the earthworks and concrete works have already started onsite, too get an early start and being able to finish this prestigious sport city project in October 2014.
